A Message from Gabe

While the last year and half for our community has been overwhelming and tragic, I have been inspired at the way our community, public sector, health care professionals, non-profit organizations and business leaders have stepped forward to lead, support, and innovate.

I am very optimistic that the lessons learned from this last year and momentum to implement change will help ensure that Montgomery County builds back stronger in a more equitable and sustainable way.

We all succeed when we all succeed.

Second term Priorities

There’s work to do.

Many of our County residents continue to feel the full impact of the pandemic and have not recovered. We must fully address the systemic issues that led to disparities that were exacerbated over the last 18 months, strengthen our economy and meet this moment.

Public Health

Continue the coalition building to strengthen our public health system take advantage of new and emerging technology such as telemedicine and implement policies that make access easier and the quality of care higher.

Public Safety

Ensure community trust and support more training and support for first responders. Expand on efforts to enhance proven community policing models and partnerships and continue policy efforts to minimize access to illegal firearms.

Education

Expand enrichment and out-of-school time programming that provides programming and support for families. Invest in more mental health support for students and establish more career-ready initiatives.

Economic and Workforce Prosperity

Continue to create a policy environment that makes it easier for businesses to launch or grow and ensure that we more intentionally connect our priorities such as transportation and housing to economic development. Invest more in workforce development opportunities at the college and work training level.

Climate

I will work with key stakeholders to ensure green policies and initiatives are implemented to curb climate change, and that the goals of our County’s new Climate Action Plan are achieved. Diverse voices will help us in our efforts to protect our environment, and I will make it a priority to ensure they are included.

Transportation

Continue efforts to ensure a comprehensive approach to transportation challenges that takes into account unique challenges in each of our communities.

Senior Citizen Population

Will continue efforts to ensure that our aging population is able to affordably and safely live in their communities; ensure recreation and workforce development opportunities for 50 + residents and expand programs such as Adult Medical Day Care to help both aging seniors and caretakers.

Improve Support Services for Developmental Disability Community

Enhance support for organizations that serve the DD community, expand workforce opportunities for people with differing abilities, and provide more support for caretakers.

Support New Arriving Residents

Ensure that newly arriving immigrants are more effectively connected to services and opportunities, and provide easier access to jobs, housing and community services.
